Old Church Slavonic [ LGLOR2761 ]

A good knowledge of ancient Greek is recommended.

An introduction to the language and to Old Slavonic texts.

This course begins the linguistic and philological study of Old Slav, by examining:

1. The place of Slavic in the Indo-European family;
2. The place of Old Slavonic in the Slavic family;
3. Cyrillic script, phonetics, phonological alternations and morphology;
4. The syntax structures studied while reading texts.

At the end of this course, the student will be capable of reading and interpreting for himself texts of medium difficulty. In order to do this, he will have acquired the bases of the Old Slavonic grammar.

Oral exam.

The course alternates seances given up to lectures (consecrated to grammar and the philological study of the texts) and those given up to reading and the analysis of texts prepared by the students.

Near to proto-Slavic (common Slavic), Old Slavonic is attested by liturgical texts translated from Greek, dating from the Xth and XIth  centuries.

The lectures examine the different chapters of the descriptive grammar and offer an insight into the historical grammar. The course is completed by the reading of texts coming principally from the Gospels.

A syllabus will be given to the students.
