Prerequisites

An elementary knowledge of modern Chinese.

Main themes

This course teaches the following themes:

- a selection of Chinese characters (writing and pronunciation);
- the basic grammatical structures (morphology and syntax);
- the translation of simple texts;
- the role and importance of classical Chinese.

Aims

An introduction to the classical Chinese.

At the end of this course, the student will be capable to read and translate elementary texts. In order to achieve this goal, he will have learnt to read the basic characters of Chinese writing, and acquired an elementary vocabulary and a mastery of the principal structures of the language. In addition, he will be able to place classical Chinese in the framework of the study of the Chinese language, and to understand the historical role of classical Chinese as a lingua franca of eastern Asia.

Evaluation methods

Oral exam based on previous written preparation.

Content

By means of short texts in the original writing, we will proceed to an analysis of the vocabulary and basic structures of classical Chinese, and its study will be placed in the larger framework of the study of the Chinese language.
