Prerequisites

This course is directed at students who have followed the courses of Latin (texts and/or language) at Bachelor level. It is useful to follow a course at Masters level in Latin (text and/or language).

Main themes

An initiation into the reading of Latin manuscripts.

The course deals with the following themes:
1. General notions of the conditions of the production of written documents;
2. Study of the evolution of  Latin literary writing methods from the fourth to twelfth centuries;
3. Introduction to the decoration and illustration of manuscripts;
4. Deciphering of some examples.

Aims

At the end of this course, the student will be capable to situate a written text within the history of Latin writing prior to the twelfth century. He will be able to decipher, or find the necessary assistance for reading a Latin text in a manuscript on parchment.

Evaluation methods

A written exam. It will cover the general principles, the writings and the decorations accompanying them, as well as deciphering of extracts from texts.

Teaching methods

Part of the course consists of lectures (theoretical explanations). The remainder consists of practical exercises in reading.

Content

After a general introduction, the following sessions will each be given over to a different writing style, which will be introduced via various examples suitable for exercises in transcription.

Bibliography

A syllabus which includes a bibliography, examples of the various writings, lists of abbreviations and copies of manuscript pages.
