Main themes The course introduces fundamental concepts of philosophy in ethics and aims to put the issue of ethical engagement in a socio-political context.
Aims The course is designed to enable students to analyse ethical issues relating to educational practice (both individual and collective) and to the organization of educational systems as well as developing a rigorously argued approach to these questions.
Content Content The course introduces fundamental concepts in ethical philosophy (fairness/good, moral conscience/objective moral order, individual/social ethics, foundationalism/coherentism/relativism etc.) as well as the main contemporary doctrines. Against the background of these concepts and doctrines, it provides an analysis of major ethical problems posed by educational practice and organization (social justice and education, education and the challenge of moral pluralism, education for citizenship, ethical code of practitioners in education, training and the vocational field. Methods : In addition to the lectures, this course includes analysis of the main reference texts as well as discussion of problems relevant to students' own experience in the field of education.
Other information Formal assessment tests students' ability to use the philosophic concepts and conceptions they have studied in the analysis of an ethical problem in the field of education and training. Developing a teaching strategy adapted to adults includes the link between theory and practice, work in sub-groups, training assessment and group and individual work on using material in practice. Illustrations from different fields of adult education and training: professional development, special education, schools, lifelong learning etc.
