Main themes The course includes an annotated reading of chosen passages from the Latin Bible, Latin patristic texts, medieval and classical theologians (i.e. Bonaventure, Thomas of Aquinas, etc.), modern Conciliar and pontifical documents (i.e. Trent, Vatican I and II, encyclical letters from the 19th and 20th centuries, code of canonical law) and liturgical texts.
Aims The aim of this course is to familiarise the students with the vocabulary and style of Latin theological texts (including biblical, liturgical and poetic texts), so that they can easily resort to the originals. By the end of this course they must be able to read, with the help of a dictionary and a grammar book, texts of average difficulty and to verify the accuracy of a French translation.
Content Annotated reading of chosen passages from: a. Latin Bible; b. Latin patristic texts; c. medieval and classical theologians; d. modern Conciliar and pontifical documents; e. liturgical texts.
Other information Prerequisites : FLTR 1112: "Initiation to Latin" or knowledge of Latin equal to this course level.
