Main themes

Expertise today; the art market (international Auction House's, and their sales conditions); systems of protection, modes of transfer, illicit traffic and stolen art, frauds and forgeries

Aims

Expertise in Belgium is accomplished mainly by the art dealers. It is important that art historians specialize in giving a professional advise that is independant of the art market. The teaching will focus on the juridical and commercial context of dealing with the cultural heritage.

Content

- Practical approach of the state of preservation report of a painting (preservation report, internal and external degradation causes of a painting, aging of the paint layer, methodology applied to the identification of modifications on the work of art).
- Fakes and forgers (history, different kinds of fakes, contribution of scientific methods for identification of fakes).
- Value of works of art and informations needed by an expert (stolen art directories,...).
- Art market.
