The iCampus server hosts the discussion  forum.

The course is intended for students who have followed the courses of ancient Latin at Bachelor level, or able to demonstrate a reading level considered sufficient by the lecturer.

The course deals with the following themes:

1. The translation of two major Latin literary works of the the Republic and the Empire;

2. The problem of establishing the text;

3. Systematic commentary presenting the context of the work, as well as the literary and human values contained therein.

In-depth analysis of works of Latin authors of the republican and imperial periods.

At the end of this course, the student will be capable to translate, analyse and comment on texts of an advanced level. He will be able to explain the historic and cultural context, to bring out the human values expressed therein, as well as to undertake a personal research as an extension of the course, which will form the subject of an oral scientific presentation.

The final mark is based on:

- an oral presentation of the extract studied individually.
- an evaluation of the interventions on the discussion forum.

The translation, previously prepared by the students, will be corrected in the course, and will be the object of a full commentary. Recourse to several editions will illustrate the problem of establishing the text.

The student s are obliged to participate in a discussion forum on the iCampus server, which will allow them exchange viewpoints on transversal questions relating to authors and texts studied.

The authors chosen for the course are Seneca (a tragedy) and Horace (Odes). After an introduction situating the author and his works, the translation is accompanied by a methodical commentary. The student will be asked to do a piece of work on a chosen extract, which he will present orally at the exam.

The iCampus server gives access to a bibliography.
