Main themes

The course deals with the following themes:

1. Oriental studies as a discipline with its historiography, as well as its own epistemological and methodological aspect
2. The main sectors which are the subject of specific courses in GLOR
3. An heuristic training in one of the disciplines, in order to carry out the writing of a small research work.

Aims

An introduction to the various oriental languages and cultures.

At the end of this course, the student will have acquired an overview of the different parts of Oriental studies, thus enabling him to to find an orientation in the pursuit of his program. He will have been able, in a specific area, to acquire the heuristic tools which will enable him to carry out a first personal research.

Evaluation methods

The final mark is based on:

- a written exam on the course matter (60%)
- the exercises and the written piece of work of the chosen specific discipline (40%)

Teaching methods

Lectures for the first part given by different specialists. For the specific program, the student will choose a supervisor. He then follows the lectures as suggested, does the  imposed exercises,  and writes up the requested work.

Content

The course consists of two parts: a series of lectures given by specialist in the particular discipline; a specific program in a discipline chosen by the student.

The lectures cover the following subjects:

- an introduction to the Indo-European and Semitic languages;
- an introduction to Assyriology and Anatolian studies;
- an introduction to Egyptology and  Coptology;
- an introduction to biblical philology;
- an introduction to Byzantine studies and of the Christian Orient;

- an introduction to Islamic and Arabic studies;

- an introduction to Indian and Asiatic studies.

The specific program of studies includes a series of directed exercises (introduction to the use of working tools, bibliographic research, reading of scientific works and analysis of their content) and finishes with the preparation of a small written piece of work, on a specific subject, allowing the application of the matters covered in the course.
