Content : The book and its techniques, from manuscripts to printed works. Description of the techniques of bookmaking and publishing. A study about the reading and the circulation of books.

To bring the students to think about the book as a material object.

Written examination for the part of Prof. R. Dekoninck

For professor Erica Durante's course.

This part of the course evaluation will include 2 aspects.
1) A series of short essays on reading which will have a formative value. Students are required to submit each of these essays before certain classes.
2) A longer final paper on reading which will have a certificative value. Students are required to submit this paper on the first day of the exam session.
If some formative essays are missing, students' mark for the final paper will be reduced to a lower one.

The "book" is approached in a general manner from the first manuscripts to the current developments in computer science. Focussing on book production conditions and the evolution of book production through the ages, the course shows the constant relation between texts, book production techniques, and potential readers.
