Main themes

The part taught by Philippe Maystadt deals with the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). It is made of six chapters:

1. Historical perspective.

2. The monetary policy of the ECB.

3. The financial integration.

4. Fiscal policy.

5. Euro and growth.

6. The governance of the euro area.

The part taught by Jean De Ruyt will deal with the following topics:

1. The state of the European Union.

2. The implementation of the Lisbon Treaty.

3. The Foreign Policy of the Union.

4. Enlargement, its challenges and its limitations.

5. The 'Europe of the Citizens' (the citizen's Europe?) and the implications of the Schengen Treaty.

6. The single market and the coordination of economic policies.

7. The future of the integration process and the temptation of a 'Two speed Europe'.

Aims

Providing key reference points for understanding European news and its functioning, to students from various avenues of education.

Evaluation methods

For the part of lecture taught by Philippe Maystadt the evaluation will be made on  basis of a written exam. This will consist in a dissertation on a transversal topic related to EMU.

For the part of lecture taught by Jean De Ruyt the evaluation will be made on the basis of a written examination.
