Prerequisites

The master courses :
LARKO 2340 Special Questions of the Archaeology of Aegean Civilisations or/and LARKO 2350 Special Questions of Greek Archaeology or/and LARKO 2370 Special questions in Etruscan and Pre-Roman civilisations of Italy

Main themes

The seminar discusses problematic issues and specific problems of interpretation in relation with the use of archaeological sources for the reconstruction of social and political relations during the Bronze and Iron Age in the Mediterranean (Italy, Continental Greece, Asia Minor, Magna Graecia).

Aims Advanced seminar for archaeologists specialising in Mediterranean archaeology. The aim is to develop a critical sense and analytical methods of material culture. Application of theoretical and anthropological concepts in archaeological interpretation.
Evaluation methods

Continuous evaluation (seminars) (10 points) and personal paper (10 points).

Teaching methods

Teaching methods: Following an introductory class on the topic by the teacher or an invited speaker, the students are assigned different regions and periods of Mediterranean lands that have been covered by intensive surveys and for which there is sufficient information on methods of data retrieval and interpretation. Oral and PPT presentations by students followed by critical analysis and discussion, partly on the basis of earlier circulated papers.

Content

The main topic to be treated during the year 2007-2008 is the use of the country-side in the Mediterranean and the information archaeological surveys yield for territorial, economical, political and religious organisation.
