Main themes Introduce an analysis of Islam as a social and anthropological fact in relation to a comparative sociology of religions and symbolic systems. This analysis will be carried out with particular reference to European Muslim populations.
Aims Gain elements of a basic knowledge of the social anthropology of contemporary Islam with view to developing personal critical reflection.
Content Epistemological questions involving the study of the Muslim religion by anthropology and sociology. Brief introduction to the history of the Islamic religion, to the central points of its doctrine and institutions. Particular attention is paid to the dynamics of Islam in the last century. The state of research relative to the sociology and anthropology of Islam. The social anthropology of belonging to Islam based, on an analysis of individual and collective identities. The sociology of organizations and leaderships (analysis of these social factors facilitates our enriching a general sociology of organizations). Analysis of discourse and intra-Muslim currents. Processes and presences of the Muslim reality in European institutions and urban spaces: ongoing transactions and competitions (notably concerning headscarves and some rites). Questions relative to the future of European Islam and means of inclusion of Muslim populations in European space. This is a lecture course, accompanied by a dossier of lectures. Video materials will be used. Visits to mosques and associations are organized if the group's size permits it.
