For students of theology: LGLOR1641 partim or LGLOR1642 partim.

Main themes |
Alternately with LGLOR2641, this course deals with the following themes:
1. For Aramean (first term) :
- a commented translation of extracts of Targums, of papyri from Elephantine and of Qumran texts (22.5 hours of course);
- personal translation of extracts of Targums or Qumran texts (15 hours of exercises).
2. For Syriac (first term):
- a commented translation of different historical, hagiographic and exegetic texts; exercises in the decipherment of manuscripts (25.5 hours of course);
- personal translation of texts read during the course (15 hours of exercises).
Students of theology who follow the course in partim (6 credits) take only the part dedicated to Aramaic.

Aims |
Mastery of detailed notions of the grammar of Aramean and Syriac.
At the end of this course, the student will be capable of:
- translating (with a dictionary) Aramean documents found in Egypt (Hermopolis, Elephantine), at Qumran or extracts of Targums;
- vocalising, translating (with a dictionary), and analysing non-vocalised Syriac texts of different literary genres and epochs.

Evaluation methods |
Evaluation is continuous, but there will be an oral exam at the end of the year: the reading and translation of a text already seen, with grammatical explanations.

Teaching methods |
The course is not in the form of lectures: students must have prepared the texts; their preparation will be discussed and improved during the course.

Content |
Le cours permet d'approfondir et d'élargir les connaissances et la pratique de la langue acquises au premier cycle. Les textes étudiés varient d'une année à l'autre et relèvent d'époques, de contextes historiques et de genres littéraires différents.
Pour l'araméen :
- étude des papyrus découverts en Égypte, celle des documents araméens découverts à Qumrân ;
- comparaison des différents dialectes araméens du 1er siècle av. - J.-C. jusqu'au 6e siècle de notre ère (p.ex. Targums de la Genèse, avec analyse des formes spéciales du Neofiti, du Pseudo-Jonathan, des Targums palestiniens fragmentaires et du targum Samaritain).
Pour le syriaque :
- lecture de textes de différents genres littéraires (histoire, poésie, hagiographie, théologie, littérature populaire) du IIIe au XVe siècles, rédigés par des écrivains en Syrie, Irak, Liban, Turquie et Iran;
- analyse grammaticale et étude de l'apparat critique des éditions de textes.
- exercices de déchiffrement des différents mains syriaques dans les manuscrits.
