Prerequisites |
This course is directed at students who have followed the courses of Greek (texts and/or language) at Bachelor level. It is useful to follow a course at Masters level in Greek (text and/or language).

Main themes |
The course deals with the following themes:
1. Notions of codicology and the phenomenon of the copy ( writing in context);
2. The different styles of Greek scripts in books, their evolution, their characteristics (alphabets, types and styles, ligatures, abbreviations, colophons, copyists, etc.).
Mostly, the initiation into reading Greek manuscripts is made in a concrete manner (reading exercices).

Aims |
An initiation into the reading Greek manuscripts.
At the end of this course, the student will be capable of reading, or finding the necessary aid to reading a Greek text in a manuscript on paper or parchment (texts copied on papyrus are normally the object of papyrology).

Evaluation methods |
An oral exam.
It covers
- examples of reading:
- the theoretical explanations
- the study of articles that are complementary to the theory

Teaching methods |
Part of the course consists of lectures (theoretical explanations). The remainder consists of practical exercises in reading.

Content |
According to the year, the course can be devoted in part to a particular category of texts or a particular type of writing; but the principal part of the course always deals with the most important styles of Greek writing in books.

Bibliography |
The requisite copies will be given out during the lectures; they are drawn from the principal collections of facsimiles and from on-line resources.

Other information |
The lecturer will fix the timetable at a meeting with the students at the beginning of the year.
