Prerequisites

LGLOR 1172 and LGLOR 1173 or a course deemed equivalent by the lecturer.

Main themes

This course deals with the following themes:

1. Translation of works of Greek authors of the classical period;
2. Explanation of specific grammatical points (morphology and syntax);
3. A commentary designed to put the work into context and to highlight the documentary and human values contained therein.

Aims

A study of the poetical works of Greek authors.

At the end of the course the student will be able to analyse grammatically, to translate and comment upon texts of average difficulty. He will be able to explain the context, and to bring out the human values expressed therein.

Evaluation methods

Oral exam based on texts seen during the course.

Teaching methods

La traduction préparée par les étudiants est vérifiée au cours et fait l'objet d'un commentaire. Si nécessaire, les acquis grammaticaux feront l'objet de révisions ponctuelles.

Content

The authors chosen for the course are Euripides and Aristophanes. After an introduction to show the context of the author and his work, there will be a commentary on grammatical and contextual points.
