The course consists of two parts: a series of lectures given by specialist in the particular discipline; a specific program in a discipline chosen by the student.
The lectures cover the following subjects:
- an introduction to the Indo-European and Semitic languages;
- an introduction to Assyriology and Anatolian studies;
- an introduction to Egyptology and Coptology;
- an introduction to biblical philology;
- an introduction to Byzantine studies and of the Christian Orient;
- an introduction to Islamic and Arabic studies;
- an introduction to Indian and Asiatic studies.
The specific program of studies includes a series of directed exercises (introduction to the use of working tools, bibliographic research, reading of scientific works and analysis of their content) and finishes with the preparation of a small written piece of work, on a specific subject, allowing the application of the matters covered in the course.
