This course, to be taken in parallel with LGLOR 1143, deals with the following themes:

1. The nominal morphology (nouns, adjectives and pronouns);
2. The verbal morphology (tenses, moods and voices of the five conjugations, deponent and irregular verbs);
3. A core vocabulary of 2000 words, from Latin into French and from French into Latin (with at least two levels of translation);
4. An initiation into the techniques of literary translation.

A systematic study of classical Latin grammar .

At the end of this course, the student will have mastered nominal and verbal morphology of classical Latin.

In order to achieve this goal, he will have acquired a core vocabulary and the main rules of Latin phonology. He will be able to apply his skills to the translation of Latin texts of elementary or average difficulty.

A written exam.

The marking is on a basis of 20 points of which:
-Theoretical knowledge: 10 points
-exercises on vocabulary and morphology: 4 points
-written translation into Latin :6 points

The lectures are coupled with weekly practical exercises which will be corrected. This will enable the student to show his level of competence in vocabulary as well as the declensions, conjugations and phonetic rules, the acquisition and memorisation of which will ensure a success in mastering the Latin language. The exercises will require regular translation into Latin, and students will be provided with a timetable of  the exercises

Based on a detailed presentation of the rules of the phonetics of Latin,the course  covers systematically the composition and the evolution of the different elements of the nominal and verbal morphologies of classical Latin. This is accompanied  by varied grammatical exercises and translations (done either in class or as homework, corrected by using the site that accompanies the course). The translations are taken from  "De Viris" by Lhomond

The accent is essentially put on the following points :
1. knowledge in all its aspects of the five declensions of Latin nouns, as well as that of the two classes of Latin adjectives , relative and interrogative pronouns, personal pronouns, demonstrative adjectival pronouns, indefinite and personal, as well as numeric adjectives and corresponding adjectival pronouns.
2.Conjugation of verbs in all tenses and voices of the five conjugations as well as deponent and irregular verbs.
3. Identification of the principle rules of Latin syntax and the procedures of the construction of the morphology of nouns and conjugations in Latin
4. Translation of Latin texts of the golden age of elementary and average level.
