Main themes |
The course begins by dealing with the main concepts of kinship. It aims to show that the divide between so-called traditional societies and modern ones is not as radical as has been claimed. By way of introduction, it aims to familiarize students with the main authors and theories in the history of ethnology. Various special topics such as polyandry, the taboo of incest and gender equality will also be covered. Students are also encouraged to make criticisms and comparisons.

3 Definitions of kinship ;
4 Evolutionism ;
5 Hunter gatherer families ;
6 African polygyny ;
7 Polyandry ;
8 Preferential marriage between cross-cousins ;
9 Malinowski and the Trobriands ;
10 The Oedipus complex ;
11 Culture and personality theory.
