Prerequisite: Advanced Spanish level.

Main themes

The course presents a historical course of the 20th century which stresses the cultural implications of the social and economic political transformations.

Aims

At the end of the course, the student :
- will master the principal aspects and stages of the history of Spain at the 20th century;
- will be able to locate in its historical context a literary or artistic work of the 20th Spanish century.

Evaluation methods

Oral exam in Spanish on the basis of a paper.

Content

The course alternates the explanations on the great stages of the Spanish history of the 19th and the 20th century, with large plans on the most significant cultural currents, presented starting from an outstanding work.

  1. The century of political instability (1808-1875). Goya and the 'Guerra de Independancia'.
  2. The Restoration (1875-1923). Sorolla, Zuloaga and the turn of the century.
  3. From the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera to the civil war (1923-1939). The house of the Spanish Republic at the World Fair of Paris.
  4. The franquist period (1939-1975). Official art: El Valle de los Caídos. Carlos Saura's paintings.
  5. From the final of the Franco's regime till our days (1975-2000).  The Movida.
