Main themes This basic course helps students situate Classical Chinese within the study of the Chinese language and interpret the historical role of Classical Chinese as the lingua franca of East Asia. This course introduces students to the basic written characters and language structures of Classical Chinese.
Aims To be able to situate Classical Chinese within the study of the Chinese language ; to interpret the historical role of Classical Chinese as the lingua franca of East Asia ; to read, write, and pronounce basic characters of the writing ; to understand, analyse and use basic structures of the language ; to translate elementary texts.
Content By means of short texts in original writing, basic vocabulary and basic structures of Classical Chinese are analysed, and the study of Classical Chinese is situated within the larger framework of the study of the Chinese language. Attention is paid to the historical role of Classical Chinese as the lingua franca of East Asia.
