Main themes Students who follow the course partim (6 credits) will study a literary text in Middle Egyptian (15h), and some royal and private inscriptions (15h) ; an epigraphical exercise will be added (value 7,5h). Students who follow the complete course (12 credits) will add the study a Late Egyptian text (15h), and write their own translation of another Middle Egyptian text, as an exercise (15h) ; the epigraphic exercise may be replaced by an introduction to the Hieratic writing (value 7,5h)
Aims This course aims at giving students the ability to transliterate and to translate and comment texts written in Middle Egyptian, while justifying their translation with a philological commentary. An introduction to late Egyptian will allow them to deal with texts of the Ramesside Period. Special attention will be given to epigraphy and palaeography.
Content - Literaty text in Middle Egyptian (15h) : to be determined. - Epigraphy (15h) : royal inscriptions from the New Kingdom. - Epigraphic exercise (7,5h) : copy and study of the inscriptions of a choosen statue or stela located in a museum. - Late Egyptian (15h) : introduction and excerpts of the History of Wenamun. - Translation of a text in Middle Egyptian as an exercise (15h) : to be determined. - Introduction to Hieratic writing (7,5h) : New Kingdom.
Other information Course entry requirements : courses GLOR 1621 and 1622. Evaluation : oral exam. Course material : documents will be made available to the students (via iCampus).
