Main themes Study of Islamic legal and religious thought from an historical viewpoint, focusing on the question of unity and diversity.
Aims The course aims at introducing the student to the history of legal and religious thought in Islam, through the study of its main principles and historical development.
Content The study of the main elements of doctrine in Islamic legal and religious thought as well as the traditional branches of Islam (Sunnism, Shi'a, Khawarij, Mu'tazila, Ash'arism), together with an introduction to Islamic mysticism. The course is illustrated with texts from the classical period quoted in translation. No knowledge of Arabic is required. The course provides E-learning activities, with compulsory registration on the I-campus platform.
Other information Prerequisite : None. No knowledge of Arabic is required. Evaluation : Oral examination of the contents of the course and discussion of a 10-page long written work on freely chosen topics.
