Main themes The course deals with the main streams of Arabic literature, from its origin to modern developments, with a particular emphasis on the encyclopaedic thought and the general classification of knowledge in Classical Islam.
Aims The course aims at providing the student with a general view of the Arabic literature from the historical point of view.
Content The course provides the student with a historical overview of Arabic literature, with a particular emphasis on the study of the greatest encyclopaedias of Classical Islam. It is illustrated with the reading of texts from classical times quoted in French translation. The course does not presuppose any knowledge of Arabic.
Other information Course entry requirements: none. Evaluation: continuous assessment ; students will be assessed orally at the end of the year on their knowledge of the course and their required reading. They are expected to write an essay. Course material: A summary of the course and a bibliography will be provided. The course is richly illustrated.
