Main themes The course deals with the overall history of Muslim civilization, from the emergence of Islam to the period of the three great empires (Ottoman, Safavid un Mughal).
Aims The course aims at providing the geographical and chronological frameworks for the study of the Muslim civilization.
Content Overall presentation of the history of Islam from the time of the Coranic Revelation to the appearing, around 1600 AD, of the three great empires (Ottoman, Safavid un Mughal). The course is illustrated with the reading of texts from the classical times quoted in French translation. The course does not presupposes any knowledge of Arabic.
Other information Course entry requirements: none. Evaluation: continuous assessment ; students will be assessed orally at the end of the year on their knowledge of the course and their required reading. They are expected to write an essay. Course material: A summary of the course and a bibliography will be provided. The course is richly illustrated.
