| Main themes |
The general study of "Greek authors" is divided into two alternating complementary courses (GLOR 1491 devoted to poetical texts and GLOR 1492 devoted to prose-writing). This course changes from year to year, with a number of criteria involved in selecting the authors to be studied. The choice may be to study one or two major classical poetical works or instead, to select one major work and alongside, to study a corpus of thematically-related texts. The initial stage of detailed translation is followed by a multi-faceted text analysis, comprising: philological analysis; study of language events and grammatical knowledge; placing the work within its biographical, historical and cultural context and examining the impact of the work's message on Western history up to the present day. Throughout, the course makes use of the new information and communication technologies (NTIC).

| Aims |
By the end of this course, students should be able to read, translate and comment the work of one or more classical Greek poets studied during the course. They should also be able to write a personal paper which fits into the framework of the course.

| Content |
The selected texts are translated and explained in the course, with the participation of the students who are asked to prepare the texts. Special attention is given to such indispensable prerequisites as the grammatical analysis and the literal understanding of the literary work in its historical and literary context.

Prerequisites: Elementary knowledge of the Greek language, i.e. a level comparable to that attained at the end of the course GLOR1171 Basic Greek Grammar and Reading of Greek Texts.
Evaluation: Oral examination.
