Main themes 1) Significant extension of core Latin vocabulary. 2) Detailed description of classical Latin syntax. 3) Varied exercises intended to give students active use of the grammatical and lexicological structures of classical Latin (advanced Latin-French translation and beginners French-Latin translation). 4) Personal reading of classical Latin texts, requiring careful translation and detailed grammatical explanation.
Aims By the end of this course, students should be able to translate passages from a classical Latin writer into French and to read from a classical work (or corpus of texts). They should also have learnt the key rules of classical Latin (verb and noun) syntax.
Content This course provides a systematic guide to classical Latin, backed up by readings from a classical writer or a corpus of texts from classical times and as such, ensures students' gradual acquisition of Latin grammar. Students' progress is monitored through a wide range of practical exercises.
Other information Course entry requirements: GLOR 1141: Basic Latin Grammar and Text Analysis. Evaluation: continuous assessment throughout the year (through tests and personal work). There is an examination with oral and written components.
