LFILO2960 : Dissertation seminar

Main themes

1) The dissertation should develop the hypothesis put forward in the dissertation preparation seminar in a precise, clear and well-documented way.
2) It should deal with a specialised issue from the starting point of an in-depth interpretation of a series of reference texts.
3) Students are required to respond to questions put to them by their supervisor and two readers at an oral defense.

Aims

By completing a Master's dissertation, students will demonstrate their ability to develop, under the direction of a supervisor, a piece of advanced philosophical research, which should be well documented and original.

In particular, they will demonstrate their ability to
1) deal with a philosophical subject in an informed and synthetic way
2) make appropriate use of research tools by meeting prevailing academic criteria
3) formulate a hypothesis and set out the underlying argument in a coherent, clear and well-structured way
4) make clear the presuppositions underlying the argument and the method used
5) present and defend the results of their research.

The contribution of this Teaching Unit to the development and command of the skills and learning outcomes of the programme(s) can be accessed at the end of this sheet, in the section entitled “Programmes/courses offering this Teaching Unit”.

Other information

For those students who have gained a Master's degree (60) in Philosophy or a 'licence' degree (second cycle degree), an ad hoc committee will check that the topic and contents of the dissertation for the Master (120) are different to those of the Master (60) or the 'licence' dissertation.
