Aims

To understand the significance of the European Union as an actor in international affairs.

To understand the external action of the EU in multiple policy areas (foreign and security policy, trade policy, development policy, external environmental policy).

To analyse the various dimensions (institutional, legal, policy outcomes) of the EU’s external relations.

Evaluation methods

Written or oral examination.

Content

- Conceptualisation of the EU in international affairs.

- Historical development of the EU's external action.

- Institutions and decision-making processes in the field of the EU's external action.

- Competition and cooperation between the EU's and the member states' external action.

- EU's external action in different policy areas:

a. foreign and security policy

b. trade policy

c. development policy (including humanitarian aid)

d. external environmental policy.
