Main themes |
The course approaches in detail the role of the publishing house and describes the technical aspects of the specific roles involved in that trade. Following course LCLIB 2000, it is intended for the students in the publishing orientation. Method : lecture for 15 hours.
|
Aims |
The course aims at familiarizing the student with the publishing industry by examining the typical activities within a publishing house in order to prepare for the internship. Students will learn how to use professional desktop publishing (DTP) software tools.
|
Content |
In this course, one of the most significant (but also least well-known) activities of the book industry is analyzed in-depth. All the functions constitutive of a publishing house are approached. The course also reconsiders the analysis of a publishing project, the contractual relations with the authors, the technical manufacture of the book as well as all the aspects in developing a publishing catalogue.
Computer exercises will allow students to practice and face common problems in Desktop Publishing (DTP). 4 supervised lab work sessions will help acquire the basic skills necessary for the use of a professional page editing software. Personal work will be required: students will be asked to design an entirely original document (this work will cover all the steps of the publishing process: from project design to document printing through the implementation phase). 2 additional follow-up sessions will be organized to assist students in the realization of their work.
