Lectures will introduce specific questions about the medieval archaeological sources and their comprehension, within the economic, geographical and social frameworks between the XIth and the XVth cent.

Specialised course for people studying NW european archaeology, medieval art historians and historians who wish to develop their knowledge of the archaeological sources in North West Europe, especially in the former Low Countries.

Content |
The lectures are an introduction to the medieval archaeology and the architecture archaeological study in the ancient Low Countries. Archaeological sources are introduced following their chronology and location (geography and rural or urban environment) and illustrate everyday life, consumption and production based on material culture. Links with written sources, iconography and other sciences lead to a socio-economic and technological understanding of the medieval societies.
