Main themes General examination of research on education : areas, objectives, methods, epistemological foundations, limits, links with the basic disciplines. Presentation and critical discussion of recent research from different disciplines involved in education (psychological, comparative, sociological, economic, philosophical, historical and political approaches). The following topics may be included : learning, transfer and motivation in a training context, social interactions and cultural and community aspects, individual differences (cognitive styles and learning and self-regulation strategies), assessment types, design of teaching procedures and curricula, comparisons of educational systems (e.g. levels of teaching, basic education, teacher training, adult training, technical and professional training, equity and effectiveness of systems).
Aims - To develop students' ability for critical analysis of research in education (relevance of topics, methods, epistemological foundations, rigour of results analysis, soundness of interpretations, etc.) and the contributions they have made to this field ; - To develop the ability undertake documentary research ; - To introduce students to various trends in research on education and undertake further examination of some of the topics they deal with.
Content The course centres on various themes (see list below) which may vary from year to year. Methods : In class sessions : the different themes are covered through the analysis of real and fictitious cases (statements, videos, written case reports), to provoke a critical discussion of the contribution of research and its relevance to practice. The course takes the form of presentations, question and answer sessions based on reading assignments and analysis of case studies. Group work : these sessions are designed to develop students' skill in analyzing educational situations, searching for hypotheses and sharing what they discover, based on the research they have read and worked on for the course. They also provide training in documentary research. Individual work : students are required to examine in greater detail an issue linked to one of the themes. They will need to look for relevant research articles, analyse them and produce a written summary.
Other information Both Education I and Education II are taught by the same team of lecturers and are therefore linked. The course support is made up of a summary of aids used during the lectures, research articles on the topics studied each year and a general bibliography. Final assessment is partly on the mark gained in the final examination and partly on the mark for the individual assignment.
