Main themes Participate in an international scientific gathering (congress, conference, workshop) with a duration of three days; write a critical report of the event (15 pages), or, have a three-week stay (120h) in a research laboratory of the UCL or another Belgian or foreign university; write a concise report of the event.
Aims Have the ability to: - participate actively in activities organised by the international scientific community of the research area to which one is committed; - write a critical report of these activities.
Content At the outset of the academic year, students enrolled for this activity will be invited by the president of the research focus to enrol for one or more scientific reunion(s) programmed over the course of this year, or to request a visit of the research laboratory. A list of scientific reunions organised in the various areas of linguistics in Belgium and in neighbouring countries is available to students on the website of the Institute of Linguistics at the address http://www.uclouvain.be/145424.html. Students are encouraged to submit themselves proposals for participation in other conferences depending on their research themes. They are expected to prepare their participation by means of one or two specific readings (in accordance with the president of the research focus), to make a critical synthesis of the attended presentations and of the preparatory readings , with a special focus on the (potential) correlation with their own research (10 to 15 pages). Students who would like to do a work placement (at the UCL or elsewhere) will consult the apprentice proposals listed online at the address http://www.uclouvain.be/145424.html. This work placement corresponds to 120 hours of work for the student, in line with a schedule agreed upon by the president of the research unit, who will act as a supervisor of the trainee. The student is asked to produce a short and factual report at the end of the work placement (theme, stages of the work, results, etc.); this report is validated by the responsible teacher and archived. It is to be submitted on the first day of the session. Students will do their work placement between 15 October and 15 May of each year (abstraction made of exceptions allowed for by the trainee supervisor).
Other information Evaluation : as far as the participation in a conference is concerned, the report written at the end of this activity will be evaluated by the president of the research focus and by the tutor of the Master thesis in accordance with quality demands which will have been announced previously. As for the research apprenticeship, the activity will be evaluated by the trainee supervisor in accordance with the degree to which the postulated objectives were achieved. Support: every activity will be framed by the permanent members of the research unit chosen by the student.
