Main themes As for the Near East, the seminar will focus on issues of Hittite historiography. With regard to Egypt, the focus will be on questions of historical geography or royal succession.
Aims Provide the student with a sound approach to the written sources (context, typology etc.) and their perusal within the framework of scholarly debate.
Content The sessions organized in the first quadrimester aim at providing the student with the proper methodology for the scholarly exploitation of written sources: each tutor will deal with a specific corpus that may serve as an example. The exercise sessions, in the second quadrimester, will enable the student to present the corpus on which he will have worked individually or in a group setting. As for the Near East, particular attention will be given to the Annals of Mursili II and the autobiography of Hattusili III. With regard to Egypt, texts to be considered may be the Travels of Hirkhouf, the Punt files, the succession of the kings Amenemhat I, Sesostris III, Akhenaton and Sethi I.
Other information Prerequisite : A good knowledge of Hittite and/or Egyptian.
