| Main themes |
Survey of the various Indo-European languages and language groups and a historical sketch of comparative philology. Thorough study of Proto-Indo-European phonology, morphology and vocabulary, with particular attention paid to vowel alternation, accentuation and the verb system (derivation and inflection).

Introduction to comparative philology, focused on the principles and methods of linguistic and cultural reconstruction ; application to the Indo-European area.

Introduction to comparative Indo-European philology, especially to the study of Proto-Indo-European phonology, morphology and lexicon.

| Other information |
Good knowledge of the historical grammar of Greek and Latin. Complementary reading is required from students of Oriental languages, focused on the historical study of Sanskrit or another ancient Indo-European language of the East.
Evaluation : written examination.
