Main themes The course is devoted to the historical and comparative analysis of Old Church Slavonic and comprises the following chapters : introduction to Slavic linguistics in general and to South Slavic in particular ; study of the main rules of diachronic phonology ; verb and noun inflection ; etymology and word formation ; verb aspect ; reading of text fragments (including Serbian, Bulgarian and Russian recensions).
Aims At the end of the course, the student will be acquainted with the major tendencies in the historical development of Old Church Slavonic and will understand the linguistic relationship of Old Church Slavonic with the other Slavic and Indo-European languages.
Content The course is divided into the following parts : general history of the Slavic Languages and the linguistic definition of Old Church Slavonic ; diachronic study of phonology and inflection ; word formation ; development of verb syntax (with particular attention to aspect) ; linguistic analysis of texts.
Other information Prerequisite : basic knowledge of Indo-European linguistics. Full course notes are given to the students.
