| Main themes |
The course studies the close relations between literary texts and the society which creates them. The socio-political contexts and the cultural environment of the literary works chosen will be paid a special attention.

| Aims |
The course intends to study either a period, a genre, or an author of Greek literature, or a chosen theme through several works. By the end of the course, the student should be able to advisedly use the concepts and the keys for understanding which were introduced during the class, and to produce a personal and pertinent analysis of a text similar to the ones studied during the year.

| Content |
The course of the academic year 2009-2010 is about Homer's Iliad, with a particular attention to the values and institutions of the Archaic period which are conveyed by the epic. The question of the transmission conditions of oral tradition, the specific editorial and textual problems, the religious environment and the main divine figures playing a role in the epic, as well as the social values pertaining to justice in a broad sense (timê, themis, dikê) or emulation (eris), i.a., will be discussed during the class.
The course consists of lessons given by the teacher, and of personal readings, in close relation to the subject under examination.

| Other information |
Prerequisite: Students are expected to be familiar with the general history of the Greek literature and to possess a solid knowledge of classical culture. Some knowledge of the ancient Greek language is to be preferred, but not compulsory.
Evaluation: Oral examination.
Recommended reading: The translation of the Iliad by Eugène Lasserre (Garnier-Flammarion) will be the reference text for this course; the students are requested to get it.
