Aims This course, designed to enhance the student's knowledge of the ancient Near Eastern and Egyptian civilizations, aims at developing their scientific approach to some historical questions.
Content The part dealing with Near East concerns the internal organization of the Hittite Empire, and its relations with other Eastern Mediterranean peoples. The part dealing with Egypt addresses such questions as how to establish an absolute chronology, to convert Egyptian into Gregorian dates, as well as the history of the relations between Egypt and Nubia (texts, local inscriptions, and archaeological remains). The part dealing with Egypt-Hatti relations examines the fourteenth century situation (reign of Suppiluliuma I), the Ramesside wars, and the final treaty between Ramses II and Hattusili III instauring a new political order.
