Main themes In-depth analysis of an author that has marked German literature. A selection of the author's complete work (e.g. Goethe's poetry, prose, theatre, etc.) or one particularly complex work (e.g. Thomas Mann's Der Zauberberg; Robert Musil's Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften) may be envisaged. In this case this book will be situated in the author's complete work and in the context of its publication.
Aims The aim of the course is to acquire a deeper insight into the works of an author that has marked German literature. The students will find out how these works are situated in a historical, sociological and cultural context, how they influenced the following generations and how they contributed to renew German and European literary tradition.
Content Contents: Study of a German author. Method: Preparatory reading and research done by the students in order to be able to take part in the analysis of the texts. If possible, the course will be organised as a seminar.
Other information Prerequisites: an introductory knowledge of German literature and a good proficiency in German (advanced level, B2 + in terms of the Common European reference framework). Evaluation : Active participation in the course or seminar (oral presentation, discussions, written essay) is taken into account. Final evaluation based on a written exam (or possibly a personal essay) and oral exam based on the student's personal reading. Course supervision: Preparation of the analysis in small groups with the teacher.
