Main themes
The course provides an introduction to English phonetics, phonology and morphology.
1. Phonetics and phonology: vowels, diphthongs, consonants; accentuation; intonation; phonetic transcription.
2. Morphology: morphemes and allomorphs; inflection and derivation; neologisms.
Aims
Provide a foundation course in English phonology and morphology and train students in the reading and writing of scientific articles in these two fields.
Content
The course provides an introduction to English phonetics, phonology and morphology via lectures and exercise sessions which give students the opportunity to practise phonetic script, accentuation rules and morphological rules.
Other information
Prerequisite: GERM 1123.
Assessment: written exam (theory and exercises).
