Main themes The themes are related to their studies and fields of future professional activities. Broadly speaking, these are all steeped in the English-speaking culture. The English language is dealt with in its main linguistic varieties and forms, including classic and popular literature. The teacher occasionally resorts to a comparative approach. Other topics may include career and studies; city life and environment-friendliness; the meaning of life & ethical values; reality, dream and fiction in literature and film, current events … but these subjects are bound to change from one year to another.
Aims By the end, the students will have become advanced, independent users in both speaking and writing. It aims at a B2 level according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages. They will be able to write descriptive, comparative, informative and fictional accounts, syntheses and short essays, abiding by specific stylistic rules. Their word-use will be wide-ranging and topic-centred, the grammatical code, worthy of a B2 level, will be sophisticated and mostly correct. In the communicative course, the learners will be able to use the target language effortlessly and appropriately when dealing with a large scope of themes. These range from general to education-, leisure- and work-oriented topics, largely set in the English-speaking world.
Content

As regards the teaching approach and linguistic aims the professors strive for variety. The learners are required to write two or three contributions a month, which are corrected by the teacher. As for the oral classes, vocabulary acquisition is tested on a regular basis. The writing classes integrate and exploit an American Culture and Language website devised by the professor in charge, at a rate of one session a month.

Other information

Prerequisites: To have passed their first year of language studies and reached a B1 level in the targeted skills, namely writing and speaking. Assessment: The overall mark results from a written and an oral assessment, each worth 50%. The final mark is also partly based on the on-going evaluation of performances and knowledge throughout the year. Course material: For the input the teachers rely on all available multimedia aids. The students' written output is compiled in a writing log or posted in an online forum. References: The course-notes serves as the backbone to both courses but various specialized books are also exploited or referred to inside and outside of the classroom. Training staff: - Philippe DENIS, coordinator and professor in charge of the main writing course; - Brigitte COUVREUR, professor in charge of the oral, interactive course. Both teachers are available an hour a week and by appointment for individualized tuition and guidance. Weaker or stronger students can also improve their language skills in the ILV multimedia and the self-tuition centers.
