Main themes
The objectives are to study the sacraments of Christian initiation (entrance into the covenant) - baptism, confirmation, Eucharist - and to give an account of the sacraments that "make" the Christian and build the Church.
Aims
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- use the major sources and tools regarding the Eucharist;
- set these sacraments in a theological context within the initiation to the Christian and church life and within the construction of the Church as the Body of Christ.
Content
The Eucharist is unparalleled and central among the seven sacraments, as "fount and apex of the whole Christian life" (Lumen gentium 11). The other sacraments are originated with it and are ways to it (Presbyterorum ordinis 5), like the other liturgical practices. The lecture will present the doctrine and the liturgical rites of the Eucharist, as the Council Vatican the 2nd has explained and recommended them, showing in this way the continuum of theological Tradition since the beginnings of the Church. The ecumenical questions and the new researches will also be considered.
