Main themes Problems and methods of dialectology : the place of the discipline in the different branches of linguistics and its relationship with linguistic geography, sociolinguistics, philology, etc. ; - the investigation into the ground (various methods, etc.) and the transcription of oral data; - the documentation: the main tools and books, atlases, monographs, etc. The segmentation of the Oïl territory : the main dialects and languages and, more especially, Romance dialects of Wallonia, in current use ; - the classification of dialects and the determination of the dialects frontiers. General topics on the dialects of Wallonia: characteristics, vitality, etc.
Aims Introduction to methods of dialectological research and more specifically to the scientific study of dialects of Wallonia, within the Oil language territory. Presentation of the main characteristics of Walloon dialects.
Content The course is devoted to the regional languages in Wallonia, and it adopts a triple approach : historical, sociolinguistic and formal. Historical : from the segmentation of the Oïl language territory till today (contribution of the dialectology and the linguistic geography). Sociolinguistic : linguistic practices and behaviours of Walloon speakers; representations of the regional languages in Wallonia; issues (namely to the survival of these languages). Formal : description of the most pre-eminent features (phonetical, phonological, morphological, syntactical, lexical) of the regional languages today. The course will also present the main available research tools and will introduce to the field work methodology.
