Prerequisites

The course being of intermediate level, a satisfactory productive command of basic grammar and vocabulary as well as the command of the language skills as described in the elementary course (NEER 1820 , Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), are required.
 

Main themes

The course is based on written and spoken texts concerned with contemporary and field-related subjects.
 

Aims

Reading Comprehension (main objective of this course):
This course focuses on developing the student's autonomy in reading comprehension The student should be able

  • to read factual articles concerned with contemporary and field-related subjects
  • and to understand them with a satisfactory level of autonomy.

Level B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Listening Comprehension

Individual:

  • To be able to follow and to understand the main points of a presentation provided it is clearly structured and the topic is reasonably familiar and field-related.
  • To be able to understand the main points of most factual radio- and TV programs provided the topic is reasonably familiar and clearly articulated standard language is being used.

Interactive:

  • To be able to understand most of what is said in an everyday conversation provided standard language is being used, the topic is familiar and without having the interlocutor adapt his language.

Level B1+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

Code
Vocabulary: consolidation of the basic vocabulary and broadening of the general as well as specific (field-related) vocabulary.
Grammar: consolidation of the receptive mastery of the specific Dutch structures (passive voice, inversion, het voornaamwoordelijk bijwoord, "er, de bijzin, ').

Culture:
In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the students aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects.
 

Evaluation methods
  • Regular self evaluation vocabulary tests (Moodle platform)
  • Continuous assessment  : two tests are organized during the year:
  1. at the end of the first term : test on vocabulary (Altissia Platform - A2 and B1 levels) and on the first term classroom subjects
  2. at the end of the second term : test on vocabulary and listening comprehension ("Zelfstudie" ' Moodle platform).
  • At the end of the year: written exam on the second term classroom subjects.
Teaching methods

The course focuses mainly on the reading and listening skills
The students will be presented with various reading/listening techniques and strategies (anticipating, guessing, ') to help them read texts in a rapid and efficient way.
These techniques are applied to authentic written or spoken texts bearing on general as well as field-related subjects. The specific vocabulary will be presented and consolidated by means of these field-related texts. Additional exercises will have to be done at home (Moodle platform and iCampus platform).
 

The specific Dutch structures are presented in context (a text of a lower intermediated level); after reading the text they are explained, exercised and consolidated by means of oral and written exercises.
The basic vocabulary will be revised and extended by means of self-tuition on the ALTISSIA platform (A2 and B1 levels) and of the 'Zelfstudie' course-notes.

Other information

Lessons in groups of max. 25 students (for practical reasons the students CRIM 1 PM are integrated in the groups of NEER 1821 ' Droit 11 BA).

The teacher is available during his office-hour(s) and can be contacted by e-mail.

Workload  - Classroom hours : 30 h - Self-study : 120 h

Possibility to obtain an exemption :The students who get 12/20 (or more) at the exemption test organized at the beginning of the year can be exempted from the course and the exam.
