Main themes The course will familiarize the student with : 1) the study of Hurrian grammar and texts (Tablets Kbo XXXII 14,15…. and Hurrian texts from Emar and Ugarit) ; 2) the study of Luwian texts of the first millenium and of Lycian texts.
Aims Provide each student or scholar interested in Asia Minor or Syria with the necessary philological background.
Content This year the course will focus on the analysis of the epigraphic documentation concerning Carchemish, the second city of the Hittite Empire. The course will hereby cover the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages. Participants will familiarize with the Luwian language and the Luwian writing system. The course (having in fact a 3rd cycle level) requires: 1. A good knowledge of Latin, Greek and Hittite, 2. An affluence with cuneiform writing, 3. Knowledge of the history and culture of the Syro-Anatolian World during the 2nd and 1st milleniums BC. The course has the shape of a course of the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes de Paris. The exam is based on texts read in the course. From the 2nd semester onwards, textual preparations will be demanded from the participants.
Other information Prerequisite : knowledge of Hittite. Evaluation : oral exam and home preparation of a text not seen at the course. Texts and books : photocopied notes will be handed out to the students.
