Main themes |
Students who follow the course partim (6 credits) will study a literary text in Middle Egyptian (15h), and some royal and private inscriptions (15h) ; an epigraphical exercise will be added (value 7,5h).
Students who follow the complete course (12 credits) will add the study a Late Egyptian text (15h), and write their own translation of another Middle Egyptian text, as an exercise (15h) ; the epigraphic exercise may be replaced by an introduction to the Hieratic writing (value 7,5h).

Aims |
This course aims at giving students the ability to transliterate and to translate and comment texts written in Middle Egyptian, while justifying their translation with a philological commentary. An introduction to late Egyptian will allow them to deal with texts of the Ramesside Period. Special attention will be given to epigraphy and palaeography.

Content |
- Literary text in Middle Egyptian (15h) : the Story of Sinuhe (part I). - Epigraphy (15h) : inscriptions from the Ancient and Middle Kingdoms. - Epigraphic exercise (7,5h) : copy and study of the inscriptions of a choosen statue or stela located in a museum. - Late Egyptian (15h) : text to be determined. - Translation of a text in Middle Egyptian as an exercise (15h) : the Story of Sinuhe (part II). - Introduction to Hieratic writing (7,5h) : Middle Kingdom.

Evaluation : oral exam.
