The course GLOR 1661, in combination with the course GLOR 1662, provides an introduction to Ancient Arabic Literary Language, the language of the Koran and all the great texts of classical Arabic literature. The course is focused on acquiring a core vocabulary and getting to grips with basic Arabic grammar, primarily noun and verb morphology as well as syntax. This should prepare students for reading basic texts.

Aims |
The course GLOR 1662, in combination with the course GLOR 1661, provides an introduction to Ancient Arabic Literary Language, the language of the Koran and all the great texts of classical Arabic literature. It has three objectives: to provide students with a large core vocabulary ; to teach the principle mechanisms and structures of the Arabic language, through the study of morphology and syntax ; to enable students to start reading some basic texts.

Content |
This course introduces students to Ancient Literary Arabic, the language of the Koran and all the great works of classical Arabic literature. It teaches students how to read and write classical Arabic. Emphasis is placed on the progressive acquisition of a core vocabulary of direct use to students and an understanding of the principal mechanisms underlying Arabic, through the study of the language's morphology and syntax. This process should prepare students to start reading basic texts.

Course entry requirements: the course ARAB 1100 Modern Arabic (elementary level).
Evaluation: continuous assessment. Students are examined orally at the end of each of the two years.
Course material: students are provided with a course manual.
