Main themes	A systematic approach to the fundamentals of classical Greek syntax (verb syntax ; use of pronouns and determinants); initiation in the techniques of literary translation (Greek prose texts from the Classical period).
Aims	By the end of this course, students will have acquired the following: 1) active mastery of the fundamentals of classical Greek syntax; 2) an ability to translate and analyse intermediate level literary texts (taken from classical prose-writers).
Content	Presentation of the basic rules of Greek syntax, in particular the verb syntax. The relevant syntactic constructions are illustrated by the analysis and translation of original texts from classical prose writers. This includes translating exercises made at home and corrected in the class-room and, on the other hand, grammatical text analysis prepared by the students and explained during the course.
Other information	Requirements: This course should be followed together with FLTR 1142 (Basics of Latin Grammar). Course entry requirements: No previous knowledge of Greek is required but students who are beginners in Greek are recommended to acquire the basic notions of grammar and vocabulary by taking the Beginners' Greek course given during the first term (FLTR 1770). Evaluation : continuous assessment throughout the year through oral testing and personal work (translation and grammatical analysis). The end-of-year examination includes a written and an oral part. Special requirements: This course should be followed together with GLOR 1172 (Basics of Greek Grammar).
