Basics of Latin Grammar [ LGLOR1142 ]

Main themes A systematic approach to the basics of Latin grammar (completed by numerous exercises). The course combines theory and practice and covers the following areas: in-depth study of Latin phonology and morphology (noun, pronoun and verb); acquisition of a core vocabulary; initiation in the techniques of literary translation.
Aims By the end of this course, students will have acquired the following: 1) a core Latin-French vocabulary (c. 2,000 words); 2) active mastery of the basics of Classical Latin (phonology and morphology); 3) an ability to translate intermediate level literary texts.
Content The lectures offer a systematic study of classical Latin grammar (phonology and morphology), together with varied exercises in grammar and translation (made during the lectures or made at home and corrected in the class-room).
Other information Course entry requirements: No previous knowledge of Latin is required but students who are beginners in Latin are recommended to acquire the basic notions of the grammar by taking the Beginners' Latin course given during the first term (FLTR 1760). Evaluation : continuous assessment throughout the year through oral testing and personal work. The end-of-year examination is a written test. Special requirements: This course should be followed together with GLOR 1143 (Latin language and texts II).
