Main themes In the first part of the course, a short survey will be presented of the specific terminology of Dutch Linguistics applied to concrete examples. In the second part a critical survey will be presented of the different approaches in Dutch linguistics: traditional grammar, structuralist schools, generative approach, functionalism and cognitive linguistics. The aim of this course is to deepen the insight in the lexical and grammatical structure of Dutch by applying different theories to practical examples and by reading scientific articles.
Aims By the end of the course the student should: be familiar with the terminology and the main currents in modern Dutch linguistics. be able to understand scientific articles in Dutch on different aspects of Dutch linguistics. be able to apply semantic, grammatical and phonic analyses to concrete examples of modern Dutch. have developed a critical attitude in the linguistic analysis of Dutch.
Content This course should : 1. familiarize the student with the specific terminology of Dutch linguistics by applying it to concrete examples of modern Dutch. 2. introduce the student to the great schools and trends in Dutch linguistics. During the course that will be taught in Dutch, the different theories will be critically applied to various examples of modern Dutch.
Other information Prerequisites: an introductory knowledge of Dutch linguistics and a good proficiency in Dutch (advanced level, B2+ in terms of the Common European reference framework). Evaluation: permanent evaluation of personal work and final evaluation by means of an oral exam. Support: syllabus L. Beheydt (2005) Nederlandse taalkunde + some scientific publications.
