| Aims |
The course aims at providing students with tools that would
allow them to read, to interpret and to comment on philosophical texts of analytical style. At the end of the course they should in particular be able to understand what is at stake in the philosophical debates concerning logic and language and, if they wish it, to commence a research in this area. Moreover, they will be able to locate these texts in the overall context of philosophy.

| Content |
A first part of the course will be devoted to the explanation of texts of the turn of the 20th century, which accompany the birth of the new logic, namely Frege's "The Foundations of Arithmetic" Russell's "Mathematical Logic as based on the Theory of Types" and two texts from the Lwow-Warsaw school (Lukasiewicz' "On the Principle of contradiction by Aristotle", Tarski's "The concept of truth in formalized language").
A second part will give an outline of the principal contemporary orientations of the philosophical problems of the language: exploitation of formal languages, informal analyses of the so called ordinary language, formalization of the natural language. Concepts thus released will be then used in the explanation of the celebrated text on logic and conversation by Grice.
